Gossip On Sports: NFL Preseason

NFL Preseason : Football fans in Chicago are feeling good again about their starting QB Jay Cutler. One week removed from a disappointing performance, Cutler looked very good against the Giants starting defensive unit, going 8-of-13 for 121 yards, a touchdown and a 117.8 passer rating.

In their sports TV program, Television host Sonny Palermo and co-host Jarvis Simes discussed this game and gave out several other NFL picks in their weekly Thursday night show.

Chicago has been quarterback starved forever and it’s really remarkable that they have been as competitive as they have been over the years without a top pivot. The Bears finally have a legitimate top-tier QB and after week two of the preseason, it looks like Cutler is ready to deliver the goods.

Next week’s game in Denver between the Bears and Broncos has to be one of the most highly anticipated exhibition games in recent memory. We can only guess that Cutler is going to want to make rookie Denver Head Coach Josh McDaniels wish that he could have a do-over. Look for him to slice and dice a weak Denver team.

The sports portal will have the full analysis of this game posted up, with trends, picks and blogs from our experts. As well, they’ll cover this matchup for NFL during their live streaming TV shows.

Running back Matt Forte made his preseason debut against the Giants and picked up where he left off last year rushing for 58 yards on nine carries and racing untouched on a 32-yard scoring run.

Staying in the NFC North, Aaron Rodgers of the Packers has looked very sharp in his first two games after he torched Buffalo going 8 of 9 for 98 yards and two TDs. In two games Rodgers has produced five touchdowns in six drives.

Up the road in Minnesota where Brett Favre stunk the joint up in his debut for the Vikings, embattled quarterback Tarvaris Jackson threw for 202 yards and two touchdowns while completing 12 of 15 passes. Too bad he won’t see the field unless Favre struggles mightily.

Over in the NFC East the Cowboys were led by Tony Romo who went 18 of 24 for 192 yards in a 30-10 victory over the Tennessee Titans. Romo guided the Cowboys to 249 yards and 17 first downs in the first half. It’s a big year for Romo and he looks ready to take up the challenge.

Michael Turner is off to a hot start in both of his preseason games and had 65 yards on seven carries plus a touchdown against the Rams. Turner is going to have a tremendous year and is worthy of the first pick in anyone’s fantasy pool. Matt Ryan continues his steady play and finished two series going 7 for 8 for 81 yards with a touchdown pass to Tony Gonzalez. Look for that combination to light it up all year long.

Over in the AFC, Chad Ochocinco was a one-man wrecking crew in a very low scoring affair with the New England Patriots. A week after the Pats torched the Eagles, New England and Tom Brady didn’t look like the world-beaters everyone anticipates in 2009. Brady was ineffective going 4 for 8 for 57 yards and no scores. He was also knocked down twice.

Ochocinco caught three balls for 69 yards including a 35-yard catch and also stepped in as the place kicker and made the game winning extra point to beat the Pats 7-6. Carson Palmer didn’t play but should be back for the regular season.

The Bengals defense is showing signs of a good young aggressive defense that Marvin Lewis has quietly assembled by limiting the Patriots to two field goals. The Bengals will surprise a few folks if Palmer can stay healthy.

Peyton Manning righted his game after a disappointing first game going 10-14 and 167 yards and two touchdowns in three series of work against Philadelphia. Defensive End Dwight Freeney was everywhere applying lots of pressure up-field and looks great in the early going.

Sticking to the AFC South, David Garrard of the Jacksonville Jaguars had a strong game against the Bucs going 10-16 for 216 yards and one touchdown. Former Viking bust Troy Williamson looked unstoppable catching three balls for 147 yards and a touchdown. Williamson caught four balls for 74 yards in their first game and looks to finally be worthy of the 7th overall pick by the Vikings in the 2005 draft.

It’s still early and the next game is usually when the starters will play the longest, but the cream is starting to rise to the top.

Was Obama’s 1st pitch a ball or Strike? Obama’s 1st Pitch All-Star Game

At the All-Star game, determined his ceremonial first pitch would reach the plate on the fly Tuesday night, Obama delivered - barely. St. Louis Cardinals slugger Albert Pujols helped him out in moving up to scoop the low toss inches off the dirt.

Obama said, "We did a little practicing in the Rose Garden. This is as much fun as I've had in quite some time. I did not play organized baseball when I was a kid and so, you know, I think some of these natural moves aren't so natural to me".

However, Television viewers were initially left to wonder whether the presidential pitch skipped. Many people at Busch Stadium were not completely sure.

Fox showed a replay from the center-field camera that proved the ball made it home in the air, when Obama later visited the broadcast booth.

Obama was at ease visiting the teams before the game and during his time on the air. Asked whether there were bailout funds to help the National League's losing streak, he cracked, "We're out of money."

Obama with a Chicago White Sox jacket, jeans and sneakers, and cheered by the sellout crowd, Obama walked out of the NL's dugout on the first-base side, shook hands with Cardinals Hall of Famer Stan Musial and trotted to the mound.

Obama went right to rubber, Fresh from warming up a day earlier on the White House grounds, all 60 feet and 6 inches away. The left-hander wound up and bit his lip as he let fly.

Obama grimaced slightly, but gave a fist pump when Pujols - a Gold Glove first baseman - made the neat grab with a specially made black mitt with "Obama #44" and an American flag on it.

Obama became the latest Chicago hoopster to try his hand at baseball. Like Michael Jordan, the president looked more comfortable in his other job.

Gossip On Sports: Twenty20 World Cup Updates

New Zealand meet South Africa on Tuesday in the Twenty20 World Cup and already punters have the dilemma of a dead rubber. Neither team needs to win this match as they are both through to the next round, although there will be much talk from the respective leaders about building “momentum”.

South Africa are hot favourites at 1.50 and have been so impressive that they have usurped India as favourites to lift the trophy. Those of a nervous disposition worry that the Proteas have peaked too early, a ridiculous suggestion given they have played one game proper - and they didn’t leave first gear.

Gossip On Sports, Soderling To Take First Set

Gossip On Sports is here to let uou all know about "Soderling good value to take first set".

Although we expect Roger Federer to fulfil his ambition today by winning the French Open at Roland Garros there could be a few surprises along the way.

His opponent Robin Soderling has had a terrific tournament, sensationally knocking out world number one Rafa Nadal and claiming the scalps of Fernando Gonzalez, Nikolay Davydenko and David Ferrer too.

Although Federer and Soderling have met nine times before with Federer winning all nine, eight in straight sets, there are reasons to believe that Soderling can take a set today.

Bearing in mind that their previous meetings have included seven tiebreaks, that Soderling has already played seven this tournament and Federer five, and at least one tiebreak looks a certainty.

Soderling has won five out of the six opening sets he has played so far, including the last three against Nadal, Nikolay Davydenko and Gonzalez, while Federer has never had an easy first set and lost three of his last four.

Gossip On Sports, old fashioned injured, horse racing news

Gossip On Sports, is now here to let you know about the horse racing news that old fashioned injured out of Kentucky derby.

In the Grade 2, Old Fashioned finished 2nd, on Saturday $1 million Arkansas Derby and was injured.

He will be out of this year's Kentucky Derby. Trainer, Larry Jones said that “He has a slab fracture to his right knee”.

Gossip On Sports - Aintree Festival Day2 Picks

Gossip On Sports is today here to tell about Aintree festival day 2 picks. Well, we did alright yesterday with two of our picks landed. There is some great racing action today today and the feature race is the John Smith’s Melling Chase over 2m4f at 3.10pm (live on BBC2). We really fancy Nacarat here.

Trainer Tom George has, so far, had one of his best seasons to date and most of that is to do with this horse. He landed the Racing Post Chase at Kempton back in February in impressive fashion – beating a top-notch field and although this is another step up I think he’s certainly on the upgrade. He is so good on a flat track, which AIntree is.

In the 4.20pm race, we think Pause and Clause will run a big race. He was a fast-finishing third in the Coral Cup at the Cheltenham Festival last month, and despite not landing the prize he still ran a great race.

He was well supported that day and with the first three pulling clear of the fourth the form looks good. This will be the quickest ground he’s encountered so far, but I can’t see that being too much of a problem for him.

Gossip On Sports - Flat Racing Season Guineas Festival

The Lincoln, a 1m handicap at Doncaster, is traditionally the first day of the flat racing season and today’s race should be run at the same furious pace as always.

It heralds a fantastic summer of turf racing stretching from the Guineas Festival at Newmarket in May to Epsom for the Derby in June. Then there is Royal Ascot, Glorious Goodwood, the Ebor meeting at York and many others to look forward to.It is worth backing these to get the new season off to a flier.

There was a big shout for this in the Lincoln, but the horse failed to make the cut, and we believe it must go close in the earlier race.

Gossip On Sports | Roger Federer hopes to light his masters form

Roger Federer hopes to end a drought of 12 Masters events without a win at this week’s Sony Ericsson Open in Miami.

The former world number one has won 14 times at the elite Masters level but not since Cincinnati in August 2007.

Rafael Nadal and Andy Murray will be among Federer’s rivals, while Serena Williams heads the women’s field.

March Madness Action | Gossip On Sports

The Morehead State Eagles were a late addition to March Madness as the opening round winner against the Alabama State Hornets.

Is there March Madness journey about to end?

Morehead State faces the Louisville Cardinals listed as a 21.5-point underdog overall and a 12.5-point underdog.

Morehead State has played Louisville four times since 1997 going 0-4 SU and 1-3 ATS.

There is exciting action all day long in the NCAA Tournament. Teams are being whittled down to the Sweet Sixteen who will move on to next week’s matchups.

Gossip On Sports, West Indies v England

One poor innings in the first test ultimately ended up costing England the series against the West Indies but it has been the timing of the declarations in the following tests which has drawn the most criticism.

Andrew Strauss’ decision to wait until the very last minute before declaring was slammed as “pathetic” and “weak” by former England great Ian Botham, under Strauss’ guidance Beefy felt the team “lost the plot.”

Botham wasn’t the only one to have a go and with the criticism still ringing in his ear Strauss has the task of trying to turn around England’s one day fortunes.

Twenty20 cricket is all about throwing caution to the wind but will Strauss show the strength needed to take victory or will England be blown away by the Windies?

Olonana beats the storm home at Randwick | Gossip On Sports

Olonana beats the storm home at Randwick - Olonana rocketed along the fence to score a thrilling win in the Group Two Challenge Stakes but minutes later the victory was overshadowed by a flash storm that hit Randwick on Saturday.

The bulk of the 11,477-strong crowd were on the public lawn and scurried to find shelter almost as soon as the John O'Shea-trained Olonana went past the winning post in the 1000-metre feature.

"That's six months of planning for her to win this race and I can't tell you how happy I am," O'Shea said.

"We thought about going to Melbourne with her but I picked out the Challenge, it doesn't always come off like this so when it does it's very special."

Olonana's win gave owners Scott and Rachel Perrin a big day after they earlier celebrated the win of a horse they part-own, Largo Lad, in the Group Two Blamey Stakes at Flemington.

"I'm so happy for the Perrins, they've had such a great day and I can't wait to catch up with them and celebrate this win," O'Shea said.

"We'll take her to The Galaxy now."

O'Shea praised Tim Clark for his ride after he saved Olonana up for a dramatic finishing burst along the rails.

"I told Tim not to be scared of running along the rails and he deserves praise for the ride, he gave her a lovely quiet ride," O'Shea said.

Hoystar charged home to finish three-quarters of a length second with Fantene the same margin away third.

Olonana's win gave three-year-old fillies two Challenge Stakes in a row after Hurried Choice triumphed last year.

About 10 minutes after the race, the storm disappeared and the sun was back at Randwick but the track was downgraded from good to dead.

The Group One The Galaxy (1100m) is at Randwick on April 11.
